Occasionally, something unexpected happens…
On his visit to the beautiful De Morgenzon estate in October 2024, Rick was presented with a sample of 2023 vintage Mourvèdre which was looking for a home. Now, it must be said that our Cape Crusader is not usually a fan of this grape as a mono-cépage but, in this instance, it really worked.

Not one to pass up on a potential bargain buy, Rick snapped it up.

Rather than creating a new ‘Episode’ for this release, a decision was made to add it as a one-off addition to the range of Francophile wines. It is, after all, sourced from the same address as both the existing Chenin Blanc and Syrah plus, what’s more, it should also sell for a similar price.

With just over 500 cases available, this is something that is likely to disappear quickly, so get some while you can.

Afrikaans Lesson #185:
De Morgenzon – Meaning The Morning Sun, De Morgenzon is the home to all the The Francophiles. The name granted to the farm by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1699. Such is the altitude and the orientation, De Morgenzon is the first property in Stellenboschkloof to benefit from the early morning rays.
